Etymology[edit]

From some derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₃érō, whence also ὄρνις (órnis). Cognates include Old Armenian որոր (oror), Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒊏𒀸 (ḫāras), Proto-Slavic *orьlъ, and Old English earn (English erne).
